Burlington, Vt. – The Old Spokes Home is sponsoring a “Wheel to Reel” movie night, Tuesday September 8, 2009, at their 322 N. Winooski Avenue location in Burlington, Vt. If you’re in town for the Burlington Bikefest this is a don’t miss social event for riders.

The first movie showing is,”6 Day Bike Rider”, an old black and white comedy featuring Joe E. Brown. This flick gives the viewer some idea of what cycling was like in the 1930s in the United States. Next up on the screen will be, ”The Six-Day Bicycle Races; America’s Jazz-Age Sport”, a documentary about 6 day races. Another very interesting look at the history of cycling, particularly in the U.S.

Old Spokes Home will start the first movie between 7:30 and 8 and the second movie will follow after a short intermission. Bring your own bug spray, your own beverages and your own chair or plan on standing, as they will be projecting the movies in the parking lot.

Essex Junction, Vt. - Fifteen minutes before Chicago was set to perform, the sky cleared and the rain stopped. The band took the stage and the sunset lit the sky with color. Doug Murphy and Mary Lou Lorenz of Tunbridge, Vt., had travelled across Vermont to see the concert. Arriving a full hour before the concert was scheduled to start, the couple sat under plastic rain ponchos, having walked down tarp-covered muddy aisles. They sat together patiently, despondent over the weather. Finally, when the sky cleared, the seats were filled, and the sky turned a pastel pink, the pair smiled. Chicago took the stage and the crowd cheered. For Murphy and Lorenz the drive and the wait was worth it.

Essex Junction, Vt. – When the Big Top goes up at the fairground, people take notice. This was the case Thursday as employees worked to set up business at the fairground in Essex Junction Thursday, August 27. However, not far away, Mowzi the Bengal Tiger cub was getting noticed too and possibly could steal the show at this year’s fair with Nerger’s Lions and Tigers Show. The big cat act from Germany features lion-tamers with over 20 years and a trio of rare white tigers. Other notable attractions and events include high-flying motorcycles, a tractor pull, demo derby, horse and oxen pulling, Budweiser Clydesdales, and performers such as Kelly Clarkson, Kid Rock, Chicago and Brad Paisley.

Starting Saturday, August 29, the event runs through Sept. 7, 2009.

Circus Smirkus Camp Performs on Burlington’s Church Street

Burlington, Vt. – Acrobatics, juggling and clowning around was the main attraction surrounding Circus Smirkus’ summer camp performance on Church Street Thursday in downtown Burlington. Eleven young artists between ages 14 and 17, who have been learning the circus craft over the past two weeks during the unique summer camp, put on a lively show in front of the Burlington Square Mall entrance.

A small crowd surrounded the troupe in the center of the pedestrian walkway for the 45-minute show. Josh Grinberg, 16, from Massachusetts grinned as he juggled four balls in the air while the rest of the clan clowned around behind him. Ben Pringle, 17, from Pennsylvania dramatically pulled a playing card out of Jay Melograno’s ear to his feigned surprise.

Another 16-year old, Erin Purcell from Ohio, talked about her week at the camp in Greensboro, Vt. ”The first week was learning…Monday through Friday was coming up with the show,” said the confident 16-year-old. Nerves are not an issue for most of these young artists who have enough experience. “You get into the rythym of the show.” said Purcell.

These youngsters are part of a tradition since 1990 when the Circus Smirkus camp began, and many have continued on to join the troupes Cirque Du Soleil, Ringling Brothers, SeaWorld, the Midnight Circus of Chicago and Vermont’s own Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour.
