Women’s Hockey

 
Northfield, Vt. – January 23, 2010 – Norwich over Castleton 3-1

Three different Cadets scored goals, and sophomore G Chiara Traversa made 14 saves as the Norwich University women’s ice hockey team defeated Castleton State College, 3-1, in an ECAC East contest Saturday evening at Kreitzberg Arena. After a scoreless first period, Norwich (11-2-3, 9-2-2 ECAC East) opened the scoring early in the second period when sophomore F Julie Fortier scored on the power play. The marker, Fortier’s team-leading 14th of the season, was assisted by junior F Kelsey Cone and sophomore D Caitie Banfield.

Burlington, Vt. – January 23, 2010  – Boston U. over Vermont 3-2

 
Boston University used two short-handed goals to defeat the University of Vermont 3-2 in women’s hockey action Saturday evening at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Catamounts drop to 7-17-1 on the season and 2-10-1 in Hockey East action, while Boston U improves to 10-7-8 and 6-5-3 in Hockey East games.

Vermont returns to action next weekend with two Hockey East games on the road. Vermont will travel to Providence on Friday for a 7 p.m. game before traveling to Connecticut for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.

Burlington, Vt. – Jan. 22, 2010 – Vermont over Boston U. 2-1 in OT

 
Vermont’s Peggy Wakeham (Bay Roberts, Newfoundland) scored a power-play goal 42 seconds into overtime to give the University of Vermont a 2-1 victory over Boston U on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

“It was a great game for us against a very good team,” UVM head coach Tim Bothwell said. “I was very proud of our effort throughout the whole game. The trick for us now is to do it again tomorrow, because you know they will be extra ready tomorrow and it will be a great challenge for us.”

Wakeham was able to drive hard down the right side of the ice before firing a shot at the net. Boston U’s Melissa Haber was able to make the save but the puck deflected back to Wakeham. As Wakeham was falling to the ice she was able to flick her stick at the puck and bounced it off a Boston U defender before finding the back of the net.

Men’s Hockey

 
Amherst, Mass. – Jan. 23, 2010 – UMass Over Vermont 3-1

 
The nation’s top goal scorer, Casey Wellman, found the net twice and the nation’s leader scoring, James Marcou, added a goal and an assist to lift No. 15 Massachusetts to a 3-1 victory over No. 17 Vermont in front of 6,421 at the Mullins Center in Hockey East action on Saturday night. The win was the fourth straight for the Minutemen, who improved to 15-8-0 (10-6-0 HEA) with the win. The Catamounts dropped to 11-8-2 (5-7-2 HEA) with the loss.

Marcou scored his eighth goal of the season just 21 seconds into the contest. Wellman scored with five seconds left in the second period, before adding an empty netter with 66 seconds remaining for his 19th goal of the season.

Norwich, Vt. – January 23, 2010 – Norwich Over Trinity 7-4

 
Senior D Eric Tallent scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining to help the No. 2-ranked Norwich University men’s ice hockey team beat Trinity College, 7-4, in an entertaining ECAC East-NESCAC Interlock game Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

Norwich and Trinity skated into the third period tied at 4-4, and the game remained deadlocked until the 15:00 mark when Tallent scored a power play goal. Tallent’s marker, his sixth of the season, was assisted by freshman F Scott Schroeder and senior D Steve Coon.

Rutland, Vt. – Jan. 23, 2010 – Amherst defeats Castleton, 4-1

 
The Castleton State College men’s ice hockey team fell to Amherst College, 4-1, in ECAC East/NESCAC crossover conference action on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 12-2-2 overall (7-2-2 NESCAC) pushing their unbeaten streak to 11 games. The Spartans drop to 6-7-4 overall (4-5-2 ECAC East).

Castleton returns to action on January 29 on the road against Tufts University. Amherst hosts the University of New England on January 29 with the puck scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m.

Rutland, Vt. – January 22, 2010 – Castleton Ties Hamilton in 2-2 tie.

 
The Castleton State College men’s ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Hamilton College on Friday night at Spartan Arena in non-conference action. The Spartans shift to 6-6-3 on the season. The Continentals move to 7-6-2 overall.

Hollinger finished the contest stopping 30 shots while Bartel made 30 saves as well.

Northfield, Vt. – Jan. 22, 2010 – Norwich Hammers Wesleyan 8-0

 
Freshman forwards Colin Mulvey and Blake Forkey each scored a pair of goals, and senior G Ryan Klingensmith made 12 saves as the No. 2-ranked Norwich University men’s ice hockey team shut out Wesleyan University, 8-0, in an ECAC East-NESCAC Interlock game Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.

Norwich (13-0-3, 9-0-1 ECAC East) scored four power play goals on the night as the Cadets just continue to roll along.

Men’s Basketball

 

 

Boston, Mass. – Jan. 23, 2010 – Emerson over Norwich 76-62

 
Emerson College had four players reach double figures as the Lions roared to their seventh straight win with a 76-62 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Norwich University at Emerson’s Brown & Plofker Gym.

Emerson (10-5, 7-1 GNAC), which leads the conference in scoring defense held Norwich to 21 first half points. The Lions held a 16-5 lead just over five minutes into the contest off a Tom Messinger three-pointer. It was the second of three triples that Messinger would drop in the half. Norwich cut the lead to nine points on three different occasions, the final time at 26-17 on a free throws by junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat.
Davis was the top scorer for Norwich with 15. Freshman G Ryan Williams added 11 points for the Cadets, who fall to 9-6 (4-4 GNAC).

Johnson, Vt. – January 23, 2010 – UMaine-Farmington over Johnson 69-48

 
The University of Maine-Farmington used a strong defensive effort to shutdown host Johnson State College on Saturday in North Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action by the score of 69-48. The Beavers allowed on 19 second half points as the they moved to 4-9 overall and 4-1 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while Johnson falls to 4-11, 0-4 NAC. Johnson was paced by Dodge’s 17 points while Rob Key II (New Britain,
Conn./New Britain) tossed in 12 points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Farmington saw Tanguay finish with game-high’s of 18 points and nine rebounds with Lelansky finishing with 13. Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) tallied 12 points and Andrew Dean (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) 10 to supplement the Beaver offense.
Terriers Comeback For Thrilling OT Win Over Johnson State Badgers sprint to big lead but can’t hold off Thomas, fall 84-81 in overtime.

Johnson, Vt. – January 22, 2010 – Thomas Over Johnson 84-81

 
Despite racing out to a 17-1 lead, Johnson State could not hold off a Thomas comeback that forced overtime as the visiting Terriers earned a thrilling 84-81 win on Friday night in Johnson. Andrew Duncanson (Portland, Maine/Portland) scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Jarrad DeVaughn (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) supplied 24 points in the win for Thomas who moves to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). Johnson was paced by Leandro Martinez (Philadelphia, Penn./Holy Ghost) and his 23 points while Brian Phelps (Milton, Vt./Milton) tallied a career-high 17 points for the Badgers who fall to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in the NAC.

Castleton, Vt. – January 22, 2010 – Husson Over Castleton 92-77

 
Senior Brock Bradford (Kenduskeag, ME) led all scorers with 21 points to lead Husson University past the Castleton State College men’s basketball team, 92-77, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play at Glenbrook Gymnasium on Friday night.

Husson improves to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the NAC. The Spartans fall to 8-6 (2-1 NAC).

For the Eagles, Matt MacKenzie (Warren, ME) chipped in with 16 points shooting 7-8 from the field and Joshua Jones (Jefferson, ME) notched 13 points and brought down a team-leading eight rebounds.

Women’s Basketball

 
Burlington, Vt. – January 24, 2010 – Vermont Over Stony Brook 67-45

 
Senior Courtnay Pilypaitis (Ottawa, Ontario) scored a game-high 21 points to lead No. 24 Vermont past Stony Brook, 67-45, before a season high crowd of 1,422 at Patrick Gymnasium in America East women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon.

The Catamounts improve to 16-4 overall and 6-1 in league play, while Stony Brook falls to 5-14 and 3-4 in America East. UVM also improves to 25-3 all-time when ranked in the top 25 nationally.
UVM used an 18-4 run to start the second half and grew its lead to 24, 50-26, with 11:49 remaining. Stony Brook could not slice into the advantage as the Catamounts maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way.

Pilypaitis added four assists and four steals on the afternoon. Teammate May Kotsopoulos (Waterloo, Ontario) added 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting and Tonya Young (Canaan, N.H.) added 11 points and five steals.

The Catamounts shot 53.8 percent in the second half and 57.1 percent from three-point range. UVM finished the game shooting 46.3 percent, while Stony Brook shot 34.7 percent from the floor and went 0-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Boston, Mass. – Jan. 23, 2010 – Emmauel over Norwich 62-61

 
The Emmanuel College women’s basketball team handed Norwich University its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss of the season, 62-61, at the Jean Yawkey Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints (13-4, 4-1 GNAC) overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to come away with the one-point victory. Emmanuel got 17 points from Breanna Ockimey and 16 points and eight assists from Casey Shevlin.

Castleton, VT – Jan. 23, 2010 – Castleton over Maine Maritime 70-59 OT

 
Christine Jaques (Burlington, VT) knocked in a three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, and scored eight of Castleton’s 19 overtime points to lead Castleton to a 70-59 overtime win over Maine Maritime in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women’s basketball action Saturday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

Jaques finished with a game-high 21 points on 6-for-9 shooting and 5-of-8 from distance. Hoxsie finished with 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds as Castleton improves to 9-6, 3-1 in conference play. Laura Cary (Schaghticoke, NY) chipped in 13 points off the bench, while Matos and Powers finished with nine and eight respectively.

Johnson, Vt. – January 23, 2010 – Johnson over UMaine-Farmington 62-57

 
Johnson State College women’s basketball had their three-game win streak snapped on Saturday by visiting University of Maine-Farmington by the score of 62-57. The loss drops Johnson to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the North Atlantic Conference while Farmington moves to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in the NAC.

Johnson’s Claudia Martineau (Washington, Vt./Spaulding) sunk 22 points while Jennifer Ferrari (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) added 16 points for JSC.

Johnson, Vt. -January 22, 2010 – Johnson over Thomas 76-68

 
Johnson State held a gritty Thomas club on Friday night to earn their third consecutive win by dispatching of the visiting Thomas College Terriers 76-68 in women’s North Atlantic Conference (NAC) basketball action. The Badgers moved to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in the NAC and received 14 points apiece from the backcourt of Andrea Deuell (Milton, Vt./Milton) and Maria Gleason (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg). Thomas drops to 1-11 overall and 0-5 in the NAC and saw Kellie Martel (Cambridge, Maine) knock down seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 27 points. Johnson led by as many as 10 points in the first half at the 10:25 mark but saw Thomas climb back and take a one-point lead by halftime behind 12 points from Martel and nine from Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, Maine).

Castleton, VT – January 22, 2010 -Bradford nips Castleton at buzzer, 51-49

 
Husson senior Shelby Bradford (Lee, ME) snared her 10th offensive rebound and converted the put back at the buzzer to lead Husson University to a 51-49 win over Castleton in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women’s basketball action at Glenbrook Gymnasium Friday night.

After falling behind 49-47, Castleton’s Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, VT) converted a lay-up with 19 seconds remaining to tie the game. The Eagles worked the ball around on the ensuing possession, setting up Amanda Gifford (Lee, ME) for a three-point attempt. Gifford’s try rang short off the rim, right to the waiting Bradford whose shot just beat the final horn.
Kristie Dunchus (West Rutland, VT) scored a team-high 16 points and hauled in seven boards as Castleton falls to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Christine Jaques (Burlington, VT) added 12 points for the Spartans, and Katie Hoxsie (Middlebury, VT) had a game-high nine-assists and four steals.

Skiing

 

Jeffersonville/Huntington, Vt. – Jan. 23, 2010

 
Vermont sophomores David Donaldson (Toronto, Ont.) and Meg Ryley (Toronto, Ont.) both won the slalom at Smuggler’s Notch to lead the way for the Catamounts on the final day of the St. Michael’s Carnival. Vermont finished second as a team with 784 points while Dartmouth was first with 855 points.

The victory was the second straight for Ryley, who has four podium finishes in as many starts this season. The win for Donaldson was the 11th of his career.

Junior Lyndee Janowiak (Manistee, Mich.) added a fourth-place finish in the women’s slalom while freshman Bobby Kelley (Starksboro, Vt.) was 20th in the men’s slalom.

The UVM women’s classic sprint relay team of Caitlin Curran (Waitsfield, Vt.), Janey McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) and Jennie Bender (Johnson, Vt.) took third-place at Sleepy Hollow.

The men’s classic sprint relay team of Alex Howe (Gilford, N.H.), Fritz Horst (Bennington, Vt.) and Franz Bernstein (Unterthingau, Germany) finished fifth.

The EISA Circuit continues with the Vermont Carnival on Feb. 5-7 at Stowe Mountain Resort and Trapp Family Lodge.
