NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Castleton defeats UMaine-Machias 71-47
-Castleton State College placed four players in double-figures, led by 16 from senior Katie Hoxsie en route to a 71-47 win over University of Maine-Machias in the consolation game of the Ed Hockenbury Tournament hosted by Norwich University Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall. Castleton (3-4) returns to action Tuesday when the Spartans travel to Colby-Sawyer for a 5:30 non-conference tip.
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Bates over Norwich 70-64
-Lauren Yanofsky scored a game-high 22 points and Allie Beaulieu netted 12 points as the Bates College women’s basketball team defeated Norwich University, 70-64, in the Ed Hockenbury Classic championship game Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.
Annie Burns, who was named the tournament’s “Most Outstanding Player,” chipped in nine points, a game-high 10 assists and six rebounds for the Bobcats (5-2). Christine McCall added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench for Bates.
Norwich (5-2) was led by senior Jess Jaggars, who posted a double-double with a team-high 16 points and a career-best 16 rebounds. Junior F Christine Daniels added a double-double of her own, posting 14 points and 10 boards. Senior G Erica Rate contributed 11 points for the Cadets, while senior G Ally Daniels pitched in nine points and team-high five assists.
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury over Union 51-46
-Middlebury ended its semester with its third straight win, as they topped Union 51-46 in Pepin Gym. The Panthers move to 3-3 on the season, while Union falls to 0-3. Middlebury scored 21 points off 24 Union turnovers in the game, while their bench held a 15-6 scoring advantage.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont over Manhattan 78-59
– May Kotsopoulos (Waterloo, Ontario) scored a team-high 17 points and Courtnay Pilypaitis (Ottawa, Ontario) added a double-double to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 78-59 victory over Manhattan in women’s basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Catamounts improve to 5-1 overall, 2-0 at home, while Manhattan falls to 3-4 on the year.
Women’s Hockey
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Manhattanville hands Norwich First Loss 7-0
-Monique Rafferty scored a natural hat trick in the first period and Emy Cote stopped all 32 shots that she faced to lead Manhattanville to a dominating 7-0 victory over Norwich in an ECAC East women’s hockey contest Sunday afternoon at Krietzberg Arena. Norwich will close out its first semester schedule on Friday, Dec. 11, when the Cadets travel north on Interstate 89 to face ECAC East rival St. Michael’s College. Faceoff from Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt., is set for 7 p.m.
RUTLAND, Vt. – Holy Cross defeats Castleton 5-0
Junior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Sask.) registered her first hat-trick of the season to guide Holy Cross past Castleton, 5-0, at Spartan Arena on Saturday afternoon in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action. The Spartans fall to 2-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the ECAC East.
ORONO, Me. – Maine over Vermont 1-0
- Jenna Ouellette scored with 12 minutes left in the game to give Maine a 1-0 victory over the University of Vermont women’s hockey team in Hockey East action at Alfond Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon.
A Kailey Nash (Middletown, R.I.) roughing penalty gave the Black Bears a power-play opportunity and that was all they needed to hand Vermont its fourth consecutive loss. Ouellette was able to tip a Lexie Hoffmeyer shot from the point past UVM senior goalie Kristen Olychuck (Kelowna, British Columbia) for her seventh goal of the season. Vermont returns to action when it travels to Dartmouth to take on the Big Green on December 30 at 7 p.m. Dartmouth defeated the Catamounts 4-3 at Gutterson Fieldhouse last month.
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury over Buffalo State 6-0
- Middlebury scored four third period goals and outshot Buffalo State 48-8, on its way to a 6-0 blanking of the Bengals in Kenyon Arena. The third-ranked Panthers wrap up their semester with a perfect 5-0 mark and return to action when they host their own tournament on January 3rd and 4th.
Madison Styrbicki scored the first of her career 1:59 into the game for the Panthers, giving them a 1-0 lead. Maggie Melberg scored the only goal of the second period at 3:26, her third of the season. Nora Bergman started the third period outburst just 26 seconds in, with her third of the year. Styrbicki followed at 6:20 with her second of the game, before Lauren Greer scored the first of her career with an assist from Styrbicki at the 11:45 mark. Anna McNally wrapped up the scoring at 16:20 with her team-leading eighth of the year, also finishing the game with a pair of assists.
Becca Shaw earned her first career win in goal, making eight saves on the afternoon.
Mens’ Basketball
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich over Wesleyan 73 – 65
-Junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat scored a team-high 20 points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds, and senior F Israel Guardado chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds to help the Norwich University men’s basketball defeat Wesleyan University, 73-65, to capture the Ed Hockenbury Classic title Sunday afternoon at Andrews Hall. Guardado was named the tournament’s “Most Outstanding Player” after putting forth a pair of stellar performances for the Cadets. Jeffcoat was named to the all-tournament team. Jamie Rajda of St. Joseph’s (Vt.) and Rui Carmo of Green Mountain College rounded out the all-tournament team. Freshman G Ryan Williams added 10 points for the Cadets, while sophomore F Antonio Davis contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

-Freshman G Ryan Williams scored a career-high 18 points, and junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat added 12 points as the Norwich University men’s basketball team got past St. Joseph’s College (Vt.), 79-68, in the first round of the Ed Hockenbury Classic Saturday evening at Andrews Hall.
Junior G/F Quincy Williams and senior F Israel Guardado each chipped in 10 points apiece for the Cadets (4-1). Sophomore G Darrel Marshall and freshman G Nickolai Havoutis added nine points apiece. Havoutis added a game-high six assists as well.
NEWARK, N.J. – Vermont over NJIT 88-49
-Senior Maurice Joseph (Montreal, Quebec) led four Catamounts in double figures with 19 points as Vermont used a big second half to defeat the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon, 88-49. The Catamounts shot 61.2 percent from the floor for the game to earn their third straight victory and improve to 5-4 on the season.
Vermont outscored the Highlanders 49-18 in the second half, as the Cats shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the deciding frame. Freshman Ben Crenca (Exeter, R.I.) recorded a career-high 15 points, while senior Marqus Blakely (Metuchen, N.J.) added his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points, 10 rebounds and a team-high six assists on an efficient 4-for-5 shooting from the floor and 5-for-5 from the line.
Men’s Hockey
BURLINGTON, Vt. – New Hampshire over Vermont 5-2
-Five different players recorded goals and senior Brian Foster made 28 saves to lead New Hampshire to a 5-2 victory against No. 19 Vermont in front of a sellout at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Catamounts dropped to 6-6-2 (4-5-2 HEA) with the loss while the Hockey East leading Wildcats (7-6-3, 7-2-2 HEA) extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
“I don’t think we made them earn their goals. Credit to them though, I think they played a great game and good teams find a way to finish their opportunities and expose team weaknesses when they make mistakes,” Vermont head coach Kevin Sneddon said. “Again, we’re stuck in this can’t put it all together. We don’t get great goaltending, we don’t play great team defense in our zone and yet offensive zone, neutral zone and special teams were probably the best we’ve played.”
Junior Jack Downing (New Canaan, Conn.) and senior Colin Vock (Detroit, Mich.) each had power-play goals for the Catamounts. Junior Justin Milo (Edina, Minn.) added a pair of assists. Senior goalie Mike Spillane (Bow, N.H.) started the game and made nine saves in 27:32 of work before giving way to sophomore Rob Madore (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who stopped 9-of-10 shots in 29:02.
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich crushes Hamilton 8-0
-The No. 5-ranked Norwich University men’s ice hockey team earned a dominating 8-0 victory over Hamilton College Saturday afternoon at Krietzberg Arena. The Cadets had seven different players score in the contest, including two goals by freshman F Scott Schroeder. Senior G Ryan Klingensmith picked up his second straight shutout. The Cadets will look to continue their climb up the national rankings when they host ECAC East rival St. Michael’s College on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m., from Kreitzberg Arena.
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury defeats UNE 5-0
The Middlebury men’s hockey team ended its first semester schedule with a 5-0 win over the University of New England. The seventh-ranked Panthers improve to 3-1-2 on the season, while UNE, new to the ECAC East, falls to 0-7. Middlebury returns to action when they host their annual Holiday Classic Tournament on January 2nd and 3rd in Kenyon Arena.
