Burlington, Vt. – Two Vermont-based businesses, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and Bruegger’s Enterprises, Inc., announced today they had completed acquisition of Canadian-based Timothy’s Coffees of the World, Inc.
Bruegger’s Enterprises, Inc., operator of Bruegger’s Bagel restaurants, completed the purchase of Timothy’s retail operations prior to Green Mountain Coffee Roasters acquisition of Timothy’s wholesale business.
Bruegger’s says they plan to continue managing both franchised and corporate owned locations of Timothy’s retail business of 139 restaurants across Canada, keeping them under the Timothy’s World Coffee, Michel’s Baguette® Bakery Café, and mmmuffins® retail banners as well as Levain World Bakery.
Green Mountain closed an approximate $157 million deal which includes the Timothy’s World Coffee® brand and wholesale business, also consisting of all wholesale assets such as coffee manufacturing and distribution facilities.
The entity, says Green Mountain, will be maintained as a wholly-owned Canadian subsidiary, with operations integrated into G.M.C.R.’s Specialty Coffee Business Unit.
Timothy’s brand produces more than 40 varieties of coffee, tea and other beverages in K-Cup portion packs for the Keurig Single-Cup Brewing System as well as in pre-packaged ground and whole bean coffee and tea bags.
Green Mountain Coffee has agreed to supply coffee to all Timothy’s retail locations for a period of 5 years .
Jim Greco, BEI CEO, said of the acquisition, “We are eager to build relationships with the franchisees of Timothy’s World Coffee, mmmuffins, Michel’s Baguette and our Canadian team members. As a longtime operator and franchisor of bakery cafés in the U.S., we will provide a strong base of support and a growth platform for the three brands, while allowing the seller to focus on its growing core roasting business.”
Bruegger’s, founded in 1983, operates 292 neighborhood bakery-cafes in across the U.S. in 25 states and the District of Columbia from it’s headquarters in Burlington, Vt. This is the 11th acquisition for the company since 2003 and it’s largest to date.
The acquisition, says Green Mountain Coffee, accelerates their geographic expansion with a complementary and strong North American brand and business structure including promoting the establishment of it’s proprietary Keurig Single-Cup Brewing System throughout North America.
